U.S. Cellular Rolls Out 4G LTE Mobile Hotspot

U.S. Cellular today confirmed its expansion into the realm of 4G LTE devices with the launch of the Samsung SCH-LC11 Mobile Hotspot.

According to the mobile operator, the lightweight device gives users the quality high-speed connectivity they expect.

The device is available online directly from the carrier now but it will also be in stores by May 21.

When on the 4G LTE network, the Samsung Mobile Hotspot allows users to simultaneously connect up to five Wi-Fi devices to the Internet at speeds up to ten times faster than 3G.

For a limited time, the hotspot will be available for $49.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate in select markets

covered by the 4G LTE network and in those scheduled to be covered by the end of 2012.

“Customers can depend on the 4G LTE Samsung Mobile Hotspot for fast and reliable Internet connectivity wherever they are,” said Edward Perez, vice president of sales and marketing operations for U.S. Cellular.

“This pocket-sized device can help simplify and organize your life and provides multiple devices with one speedy Internet connection.”

Zynga Confirms Acquisition of Mobile Gaming Startup Wild Needle

One of the biggest names in mobile gaming has purchased one of the new names in mobile gaming.

On Monday, word surfaced that Zynga purchased mobile games startup Wild Needle – the company behind Shoptown Hero for Apple’s mobile devices.

“We hear this was a talent-sized deal, which is in line with most Zynga acquisitions,” reports Tech Crunch.

“Zynga usually does smaller deals in the $5 to 20 million range for teams of game developers. But it has bumped up spending over the last year and a half…”

On the surface, Shoptown Hero looks like many of the casual sim games that were popular in early 2011 on iOS. In the game, players have to save a small town from a tycoon named Fat Ralph. They have to fill their stores with virtual goods and sell them. The twist is that they have to negotiate prices with customers to earn profits.

The financial terms behind the deal were not disclosed publicly.

Virgin Airlines is the first airline to allow phone calls during flight. The businessmen and others are joyous about staying connected, but for others this is a noisy disturbance. Virgin workers believe that only ten people can be connected at a time, so hopefully this smaller number will help to keep noise level lower.

Dozing air passengers face the prospect of being rudely awakened by someone talking loudly on their mobile phone after Virgin Atlantic became the first British airline to permit calls on board flights today.

While the news may be warmly welcomed by businessmen and others for whom it is important to keep connected at all times, anti-noise campaigners claim the decision is ‘crazy’.

Q. The computers we use today are based on large-scale integrated circuits (LSI), which are made of silicon transistors. The size of transistors is becoming smaller and smaller, but approaching the limits of microfabrication. Power consumption increases sharply, and the cost of making devices smaller becomes high. So we’re approaching the limits in a variety of senses, both physically and economically. The semiconductors that have supported electronics and information technology so far utilize only the charge of electrons. But the Tanaka Lab is working to create a new paradigm for electronics, by utilizing spin, another degree of freedom possessed by electrons. By analogy with classical mechanics, spin is the rotation of an electron. Because the rotation of electrons can never be stopped, electrons can be described as the world’s smallest magnets. The fact that materials can be made to exhibit ferromagnetism by controlling the direction of spin is a major key to spintronics technology. Q. Motricity Reveals Loss of $8.7 Million in Q1 Report

Motricty today reported first quarter 2012 losses to the tune of $8.7 million.

One year ago, those losses were $6.1 million, a fact that underscores ongoing trouble for the mobile web services company.

“We believe that our future cash flow from operations and available cash and cash equivalents will be sufficient to meet our liquidity needs for the next 12 months,” Motricity states, adding that choppy waters are still ahead.

“However,” the company goes on to say, “this may not be the case, our longer-term liquidity and ability to execute on our longer term business plan is contingent on our ability to raise additional capital, including in the proposed rights offering and on our not experiencing any events that may accelerate the payment of amounts outstanding under our term loan and revolving credit facility… We may also need to raise additional capital to execute our longer term business plan.”

“If we are unable to raise sufficient funds, we may need to implement additional cost reduction measures and explore other sources to fund our longer term business needs and repay amounts outstanding under our term loan and revolving credit facility when due,” Motricity’s SEC filing reads. “Our failure to do so could result in, among other things, a default under our term loan and revolving credit facility, loss of our customers and a loss of our stockholders’ entire investment.”
